SurfaceView : Android Studio

SurfaceView is used for a rapid update of a graphical user interface (GUI). The format and the size of the SurfaceView can be controlled. SurfaceView places the surface at the correct location on the screen. The following code shows a video in a surface view.

SurfaceView is placed inside a constraint layout in activity_main.xml

package com.example.surfaceview;

import androidx.annotation.NonNull;
import androidx.appcompat.app.AppCompatActivity;
import android.media.AudioManager;
import android.media.MediaPlayer;
import android.os.Bundle;
import android.view.SurfaceHolder;
import android.view.SurfaceView;
import java.io.IOException;

public class MainActivity extends AppCompatActivity implements SurfaceHolder.Callback, MediaPlayer.OnPreparedListener {

    private SurfaceView surfaceView;
    private MediaPlayer mediaPlayer;
    private SurfaceHolder surfaceHolder;
    private static final String VIDEO_PATH="https://www.learningcontainer.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/05/sample-mp4-file.mp4";

    @Override
    protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
        super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
        setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);

        surfaceView = (SurfaceView)findViewById(R.id.surfaceView);
        surfaceHolder = surfaceView.getHolder();
        surfaceHolder.addCallback(MainActivity.this);

    }

    @Override
    public void surfaceCreated(@NonNull SurfaceHolder holder) {
        mediaPlayer = new MediaPlayer();
        mediaPlayer.setDisplay(surfaceHolder);
        try {
            mediaPlayer.setDataSource(VIDEO_PATH);
            mediaPlayer.prepare();
            mediaPlayer.setOnPreparedListener(MainActivity.this);
            mediaPlayer.setAudioStreamType(AudioManager.STREAM_MUSIC);
        } catch (IOException e) {
            e.printStackTrace();
        }

    }

    @Override
    protected void onPause() {
        super.onPause();
        releaseMediaPlayer();
    }

    @Override
    protected void onDestroy() {
        super.onDestroy();
        releaseMediaPlayer();
    }

    private void releaseMediaPlayer() {
        if (mediaPlayer != null) {
            mediaPlayer.release();
            mediaPlayer = null;
        }
    }

    @Override
    public void surfaceChanged(@NonNull SurfaceHolder holder, int format, int width, int height) {

    }

    @Override
    public void surfaceDestroyed(@NonNull SurfaceHolder holder) {

    }

    @Override
    public void onPrepared(MediaPlayer mp) {
        mediaPlayer.start();
    }

}

In AndroidManifest.xml user internet permission should be made. The following code shows AndroidManifest.xml.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<manifest
    xmlns:android="http://schemas.android.com/apk/res/android"
    package="com.example.surfaceview">

    <uses-permission android:name="android.permission.INTERNET"/>

    <application
        android:allowBackup="true"
        android:icon="@mipmap/ic_launcher"
        android:label="@string/app_name"
        android:roundIcon="@mipmap/ic_launcher_round"
        android:supportsRtl="true"
        android:theme="@style/Theme.SurfaceView">
        <activity android:name=".MainActivity">
            <intent-filter>
                <action android:name="android.intent.action.MAIN" />

                <category android:name="android.intent.category.LAUNCHER" />
            </intent-filter>
        </activity>
    </application>

</manifest>
